Ukrainian concert in the Wangeliner Garten on Friday, September 27, 2024 with singer Mariana Sadovska and double bassist Mark Tokar
Mariana Sadovska and Mark Tokar have been working together for more than 10 years. They draw on traditional Ukrainian songs for their songs. Their live performances straddle all genre boundaries, conjuring up archaic worlds and interweaving rhythms, harmonies and lyrics to create a unique musical narrative. In their concert, they take up the fight with our crisis-ridden world, in which the individual threatens to fall under the wheels of time. Contemporary poetry from Ukraine forms the backbone for songs that oscillate between raw sounds and delicate voices. Whether chains of command, everyday notes or gloomy linguistic metaphors - the new musical direction combines vulnerability and a spirit of resistance.
After Mariana Sadovska's performance at "Performing Exiles" at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, the taz wrote: "As if in passing, in this piece she goes from the melancholy of Ukrainian folk music to the heavy metal scream of rage, the loud lament at the end... The artist puts so much emotion into her voice that you get goosebumps."
The internationally renowned Ukrainian double bassist Mark Tokar is a key figure in the Ukrainian jazz scene. He has been a soldier in his country since February 2022. Long-term diplomatic organization is required for him to be released for concerts and to be able to travel. We hope he will be part of this extraordinary concert as planned!
