FATALITY, CONFIDENCE AND INSURANCE - An evening with Gabriele von Arnim
Gabriele von Arnim's writing combines autobiographical storytelling and essayistic reflections in a unique, philosophical and deeply moving way. Her last two books "Das Leben ist ein vorübergehender Zustand" and "Der Trost der Schönheit" open up optimistic and encouraging perspectives on life, its challenges and existential questions: How can inner freedom be wrested from a life marked by blows of fate? How can moments of happiness be experienced despite everything? Is it possible to find solace in a sense of beauty despite current crises? Her books broaden our view of the world around us and its transience, encouraging us to endure ambivalence. Her latest work "Dear Grandchildren or The Art of Confidence" encourages us to practice confidence and use it as an antidote to uncertainty and stagnation, so as not to despair of reality. How do we become confident? Another topic of this evening...
Born in 1946, Gabriele von Arnim lived in New York for 10 years as a freelance journalist after completing her studies and doctorate in sociology and political science. She then wrote for newspapers and radio and worked as a presenter for ARTE, SDR/SWR and SF. She lives in Berlin.
