In their comedy, Govare and Choay tell the story of lottery winners and what they lose in the process.
France 2024, Written & directed by Romain Choay / Maxim Govare, Length: 103 minutes, FSK 16
DA: Fabrice Eboué, Audrey Lamy, Anouk Grünberg
The authors send their characters through an obstacle course, starting with a lottery win of 5 million euros, through a prison episode and ending with a surprising happy ending. All this in a mix of comedy and drama, action, suspense, pathos, bitter punchlines and black humor included. The extreme situation of a big lottery win brings to the surface who the movie protagonists really are at their core.
The film shows little sympathy for its gambling winners, mercilessly punishing weaknesses, guilt and missteps. In terms of acting, it reaches its climax with Anouk Grünberg. The geriatric nurse she plays makes a name for herself as a moral conscience when the lottery ticket (60 million euros) of the recently deceased Henri falls into her hands. However, this moral conscience undergoes an astonishing metamorphosis into pragmatic action.
