polAND MARKET 2024
Traditional melodies paired with pop elements and provocative lyrics - this is the distinctive mix of styles with which the Polish band "Same Suki" is successful and expresses its freedom. The musicians translate the name of the band as "strong women", as their music is rooted in various genres, from folk to classical and ethnic to modern music. The term "suka" has several meanings in Polish: Firstly, the "suka" from Biłgoraj is an old string instrument that is played upright on the knees. What makes it so special is the unique fingernail technique, in which the strings are not pressed but gently touched from the side with the nail, creating a sound with many microtones. The musicians transfer this traditional sound to modern times and combine it with contemporary musical influences. Their band's pieces are daring in terms of both sound and lyrics and are based on ancient folk poetry and roots lyrics. At the same time, the band plays with the ambiguity of the word "suka", which also stands for bitch in Polish. In ancient Eastern European mythology, the bitch symbolizes a woman who knows her inner strength, courageously goes her own way and refuses to be pigeonholed. She is independent, creative and sets her own boundaries. The members of "Same Suki" see themselves as a close-knit community of self-confident women who make unconventional music and tell stories that are characterized by many female perspectives. They also play with the meanings of words in their lyrics and do not shy away from addressing societal and social problems, often in a provocative way.
the band is known for their commitment, be it at protests against the construction of nuclear power plants in Poland or at their performances, such as at the Warsaw Uprising Museum. Their songs address complex and often uncomfortable topics. The open treatment of feelings and sexuality, especially from the female perspective, also repeatedly leads to criticism and hostility
.The members of "Same Suki" have a classical music education, started with instruments such as the violin and cello, but later discovered the potential of traditional instruments such as the "suka", the Greek lyre or the oriental kemence. The new sonic possibilities that folk music offered them opened up creative freedom in which they found their musical identity.
