The film tells of a small peace in a terribly big war. And today, new wars ensure that it hits us right in the heart.

, the festival of love, is coming. In the freezing cold winter of war in 1914, the song "Silent Night, Holy Night" unfolds its magic of reconciliation in a wondrous way that was not thought possible. Suddenly, there are fir trees between the trenches in no man's land, which is being fought over with heavy losses. French, German and Scottish soldiers lay down their weapons, sing Christmas carols together, give each other presents of champagne, cigarettes and chocolate, play soccer and fraternize. A brief interlude of peace until the army command declares the spirit of fraternization to be high treason and makes it clear to the front-line soldiers that it is their duty to slaughter each other.
The story, which French
filmmaker Christian Carion has turned into a stirring drama, is based on authentic events. The film can be forgiven for some strikingly sentimental moments, because it clearly spans the broad arc of its fraternization fable and makes each individual fate movingly transparent. A film with a top-class cast about civil courage in war that avoids the usual clichés and is deeply moving.
