In psychology, the term "Folie à Deux" refers to the shared psychotic disorder of two people in a close relationship. Double madness. Because the Joker is joined in the movie by a second character, the pyromaniac Harley Quinn. For a while, they enter into a kind of symbiosis in which anything seems possible and which could plunge Gotham into chaos. Arthur Fleck and Quinn meet in Arkham Asylum, Gotham's prison island, where Arthur Fleck is awaiting trial. He has five people on his conscience, and his defense attorney wants to plead insanity in order to get him a lighter sentence. But he has to cooperate. In the prison choir, in which he is allowed to take part thanks to his music-loving guard Jackie, Arthur meets inmate Harley, who immediately takes him under her wing and turns out to be a big fan. The fascination is mutual and is soon expressed in their first song together. Further episodes, solo and in duet, mainly jazz and soul standards from the 1940s and 1950s, which serve as a commentary on the emotional state and psychological condition of the characters. In this sense, the movie is also a musical.
The Joker has little more in common with the traditional white clown from circus and theater history than the color of his face and his authoritarian character, albeit in a highly perverted form. In Todd Phillips' film, the Joker is not a rebellious anti-hero, not a modern Robin Hood who avenges the poor, but a dull loser with a thirst for recognition.
