Director Dresen takes the private perspective of Hilde Coppi for his film about the resistance against the Nazi dictatorship.
Germany 2024, Director: Andreas Dresen, Length: 125 minutes
DA: Liv Lisa Fries, Johannes Hegemann, Lisa Wagner, Alexander Scheer, Lena Urzendowsky, Fritzi Haberlandt and others.
Hilde Coppi belonged to the "Rote Kapelle" resistance network - a name given to the loosely affiliated groups by the Gestapo due to their communist background. Together with her husband Hans Coppi, she took part in leaflet campaigns and helped with the
attempts to transmit Wehrmacht plans to the Soviet Union using a radio. In 1942, they were arrested along with other members and eventually sentenced to death. During her time in prison, Hilde gave birth to her son. Hans Coppi Junior, now 81, later researched the "Red Orchestra" as a historian. The film is structured in two narrative strands. One tells the linear story of Hilde's time in prison, from her arrest to her execution. Fear, despair, hope, courage: Liv Lisa Fries' outstanding performance shows the emotional world of her character in all its facets, while flashbacks tell the back story.
Andreas Dresen chooses a very private perspective for his film and largely ignores the political and ideological background. This can be seen as a weakness, but it also creates a very universal picture of resistance.
