Marco Bellochio stages this infamous intrusion into the privacy of the Jewish Martaro family in 1858 with rage, but in a controlled, classical form. He never leaves any doubt that the so-called "legal" kidnapping, which is also announced, is a barbaric act. The screenplay is a carefully crafted indictment, but never claims to be able to fully fathom what is going on inside the abductee.
