Is there a more ideal person than Henry Fonda to tell the story of democratic hope and the history of violence and injustice?
Austria / Germany 2024, Written + Directed by Alexander Horwath, Length: 184 minutes
With: Robert De Niro, Henry Fonda, Peter Fonda, Jodie Foster and others.
Is there a more ideal person than Henry Fonda to tell the story of the United States, its democratic hope and its history of violence and injustice? The answer of Alexander Horwath's essay film is an unequivocal no. It spans a panorama of the history and dream life of the USA that begins in 1651 with the arrival of Fonda's Dutch ancestors and does not end with his death in 1982.
The cinematic search begins with the roots that the Fonda family, who immigrated from Holland in the 17th century, put down on the East Coast, later to become the state of New York. In addition to the places where Fonda's biography took place, it goes to the locations of his significant films. This takes place with an attentive eye for ambiguity and continuity.
Fonda was uniquely predisposed for presidential roles. His demeanor in front of the camera was distinguished, controlled and strict. He thought carefully before he took action. From 1939 onwards (The Young Mr. Lincoln), audiences were able to see how he gradually grew into the role of the father of the country. Even beyond the big screen, "Fonda for President" was a dream of many US liberals. Horwath puts this dream to the test in his film.
