The Kulturverein Feldberger Land e. V. invites you to an author reading with Grit Lemke.
"Anything was possible: turning coal into electricity, building a city out of the heath and bringing the stars into the city..."
In the 1960s and 1970s, workers and their families, including Grit Lemke and her parents, came to Hoyerswerda, a model GDR town. In the mornings, the adults rolled off in shift buses, the children grew up in a collective. After German reunification, there were mass layoffs and pogroms against former GDR contract workers. After that, nothing is as it was.
In her book, Grit Lemke collects conversations with friends and family and tells of her own life as part of a proletarian bohemian group around Gerhard Gundermann, who met in the basement club at night and worked hard during the day.
The author was awarded the Hans Fallada Prize in 2024 for her narrative documentary Kinder von Hoy (Suhrkamp Verlag).
