Guided tour of the residential town of Neustrelitz, which also deserves to be called the gateway to Mecklenburg

I invite you to accompany me on a guided tour of the residential town of Neustrelitz, which also deserves to be called the gateway to Mecklenburg. A city that arose from the fact that on 24.10.1712 the moated castle in Strelitz burned down and a new residential castle was built in Glienke on the Zierk Lake. Here served as a model the ideal city in the Nordic countries: Glückstadt. The foundation of the residential town in 1733, together with the construction of the palace and the pleasure garden, was the merit of Duchess Dorothea Sophie of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön, who actually directed the duchy for three decades instead of her husband.

This was the most important building policy measure that was carried out in the entire 200-year history of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Especially the building activities and the cultural commitment of the duchess have decisively influenced the duchy and left traces on which one can still walk today.

Come with us to the palace park of Neustrelitz, which is characterized by the pleasure garden with a baroque central axis and with figural ornaments such as the group of figures from the Madrid Prado , the goddess of victory for the battle of people as well as the vase of Drake with figural decoration of the joy of life and beautiful nature. The English Garden with the Luisen Temple is separated with the help of a double hedge .

In the surroundings of the palace garden there are historical buildings from the 18th/19th century. Here is mentioned: the Hebetempel, the Pulverturm, the Marstall, the theater, the mortgage bank, the Hobesaal, the Kavaliershäuser, the castle church, the Hirschtor, the Marienpalais, the figures in the driveway to the castle, the Götterallee and the Orangerie with the children's fountain and praying boys.
