Sunrise - A Song of two Humans, USA 1927 - 91 min, 35mm, Director: Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau "Sunrise", a masterpiece of German Expressionism, tells the simple story of a husband who cheats on his wife with a treacherous city girl. The film shifts from a fairytale depiction of country life to a dynamic portrait of the bustling, modern American city. In 1926, Murnau went to America and his first American film was "Sunrise", based on the story "The Journey to Tilsit" by Hermann Sudermann. The film was awarded a special Oscar at the first Academy Awards for a unique and artistic production and is considered one of the most beautiful films of all time. The Casablanca Film Club will be showing the film using old cinema technology on 35mm film reels and we are delighted to have the Berlin composer and silent film pianist Stephan Graf von Bothmer to accompany the screening on the cathedral organ.
