Alongside Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Blechen (1798-1840) was one of the most important landscape painters of the early 19th century. The film follows Carl Blechen to original locations in Italy, such as Naples, Capri and Amalfi, and yet brings the painter into the here and now through an artistic dialog with the Cottbus draughtsman and sculptor Steffen Mertens. In front of the camera, portrait busts, drawings and a puppet theater are created and, as they emerge, we immerse ourselves in the life and sun-drenched landscapes of Carl Blechen, whom Max Liebermann saw as a clear forerunner of Impressionism. Followed by a film discussion with the director and Kilian Heck, Chair of Art History at the Caspar-David-Friedrich Institute. DE 2020-2023, Director: Donald Saischowa, 90 min. The film series is a cooperation between the CDF Anniversary Office and the Casablanca Film Club.
