2023 marked the 90th anniversary of the book burning by the National Socialists in Germany. In Berlin, an underground memorial on today's Bebelplatz commemorates the event. Erich Kästner was both a witness and a victim. He stood in the eerie crowd and watched the book burning in silence. And he left behind a moving and stirring text about this event.
For many years, Erich Kästner lived in Berlin, where he experienced his greatest successes. The texts are a contemporary document and reflect Kästner's inner turmoil and his suffering in the face of time and circumstances. But they also show the irrepressible strength that enabled him to survive the Nazi era.
Chansons, pop songs and other contemporary music from these years can also be found in the accompanying and framing music.
