Barry Douglas
Barry Douglas has built a distinguished international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, the first non-Russian pianist to do so since 1958. His exemplary piano technique and interpretative finesse has led to sell-out performances all over the world.
As a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, he has performed around the globe, from the Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall in London to the "Forbidden City" in Beijing, the Grand Theatre in Shanghai and the Villa Papendorf near Rostock. The names of the orchestras with which Barry Douglas has performed reflect the "Who's Who" of international orchestras: BBC Scottish Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Singapore Symphony, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Orchestre National de France, Seattle Symphony, Melbourne and Sydney Symphonies, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Moscow State Symphony, Vancouver and Colorado Symphonies, the Halle Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestras and many others.
In 1999 Douglas founded the Camerata Ireland chamber orchestra to provide performance and development opportunities for young musicians from the North and Ireland. As Artistic Director of the chamber orchestra, his primary aim, alongside the pursuit of musical excellence, is to promote the peace process in Ireland.
His numerous awards speak for themselves: in 2002, Douglas was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his achievements in the field of music.
Empire (OBE) and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in January 2021. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Music, a Doctor of Music from Queen's University Belfast and in September 2007 Douglas received an Honorary Doctorate from the National University of Ireland. Douglas releases most of his recordings on the Chandos label. He recorded Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition as his debut album. Most recently he has recorded all of Brahms' solo piano works on six albums. He has also released his own piano interpretations of old Irish folk music and pieces by contemporary songwriters on the Chandos label. Barry Douglas is now making his third guest appearance at the Villa Papendorf.
