Cycling trip to the east of the European Union
Dr. Reinhard Klette rode his e-bike through Poland and the three Baltic countries for almost five weeks in June 2022.
This bicycle tour was very impressive in terms of the varied Baltic landscape, the helpful and always open-minded inhabitants and the demands placed on a bicycle traveler in unfamiliar terrain. His trip was made even more explosive by Russia's war against Ukraine, which had begun three months earlier, and by the political conflict that suddenly developed in May 2022 over the Suwalki Corridor, which connects Belarus with the Kaliningrad region.
In his lecture, the author discusses the very differentiated relationship between many Baltic states and their Russian neighbors, describes the differences in the relationship between the Russian Tsarist Empire and the Baltic territories conquered in the 18th century and the integration of these three Baltic states into the USSR in a historical comparison. However, he also describes the current relationship between the three Baltic countries. In 1989, these inhabitants of the Baltic region underlined their political will for state sovereignty with an impressive manifestation: on August 23, two million Baltic citizens formed a 600-kilometer-long civic chain from Estonia to Lithuania to mark the 50th anniversary of the Hitler-Stalin Non-Aggression Treaty.
