Showing and preserving HALTUNG is particularly important when antagonisms are at work in society and are up for debate, when opposing parties (not only in the political sense) act and express themselves in conflict with each other. The exhibition looks for formulations in the visual arts of the 20th and 21st centuries that encourage people to reflect on this. Based on the graphics collection of the Nordkirche, the selection focuses on two thematic areas, which are shown in two different locations.
In the MARIENKIRCHE, the focus is on the New Testament: works by Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Georg Ehrlich, James Ensor, Josef Hegenbarth, Willy Jaeckel, Oskar Kokoschka, Emil Nolde, Christian Rohlfs, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Max Slevogt show attitudes ranging from humility to resistance and anger in the stories of the New Testament. Otto Dix's "Saul and David" opens the spectrum as an Old Testament 'prologue' full of contrasts.
In the PETRIKIRCHE, exemplary positions are shown that have defined themselves through their committed actions in a threatened world. In addition to the life's work of Martin Luther, the focus is on works by Ina Barfuss, Ernst Barlach, Joseph Beuys, Lovis Corinth, HAP Grieshaber, Jochen Hiltmann, Alfred Hrdlicka, Käthe Kollwitz and Wolf Vostell. As a contemporary position, loans from Neubrandenburg-based artist Ramona Seyfarth lead us into the present. In her installation "HAPPY END_?", she invites visitors to take part in folding doves of peace. The longing for peace cannot be satisfied without the participation of everyone.
The exhibition can be viewed during church opening hours (excluding church services): Marienkirche (Neuer Markt): Mon-Sat 10:00-17:00 (entrance fee), Sun 11-15 (voluntary donations) Petrikirche (Alter Markt): Mon-Sun 10:00-18:00 Current information: www.innenstadtgemeinde.de
