The Appeltown Washboard Worms skiffle in the Zarrentin Monastery, fiddling, plucking, scrubbing and hitting the keys in a lively and brisk manner
The Hamburg-based Appeltown Washboard Worms, who have been on tour in Hamburg and the surrounding area for over forty years, still play their unique "Boogie-Woogie-Skiffle-Rock" program with the greatest of enthusiasm. On stages large and small, they delight audiences with their rousing mix of Irish folk songs by the Dubliners, country hits by Johnny Cash and artistic boogie-woogie, played four- and six-handed on the piano. Old skiffle songs by Lonnie Donegan alternate with rock'n'roll by Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and the Beatles. The program is livened up by instrumental solos by the magical violinist, who can't be kept on stage and whose playing triggers storms of enthusiasm in the audience. Even the presentation of their concerts is a great pleasure.
Only founding father Wolfgang Hilke remains from the original line-up, with new young musical talents spurring the veterans on to ever greater enthusiasm. The "APPELTOWNS", who perform with the best-known musicians on the Hamburg scene on all club stages in and around Hamburg, are welcome guests at the Alstervergnügen and Hafengeburtstag as well as at the Jazzmarathon at CCHamburg, elicit such spirited pieces from the washboard and their colorful spectrum of string, keyboard and percussion instruments that the audience can't stay in their seats.
Now we can experience them again in the refectory of the Zarrentiner monastery. Perhaps it will motivate one or two members of the audience to invite these jack-of-all-trades of good humor to their own wedding so that they can experience such a "snappy" concert at home.
