Antonio Salieri was court composer in Vienna when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrived in the city in 1781. With his informal manners and exuberance, Mozart constantly overstepped the boundaries of social convention. However, his compositions, brilliantly perfected, testify to his great talent. Salieri sees himself and his abilities insulted by the boy wonder and begins a personal battle with Mozart. He tries to sabotage Mozart's career through intrigue and rumors. In the process, Salieri finds himself in an inner conflict between his admiration for Mozart's music and his own jealousy.
Peter Shaffer's play, made famous by Miloš Forman's multi-Oscar-winning film adaptation, tells the story of the rivalry between two artists between historical fiction and psychological drama. Mozart's bouncy and graceful energy is brought to the stage of the Grosses Haus by the ensembles of the Volkstheater in a joint interplay of music, singing, acting and dance.
