Fellow Lecture by Professor Dr. Gudrun Heidemann (Fellow of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald/Uniwersytet Łódzki)

Europe's memorial culture is characterized on the one hand by a state-controlled history policy and on the other by a family memory strategy that shows gaps like highlights. Corrections of such traditional (family) history(ies) testify to an explosiveness in which the previously concealed overlaps with the all too often told. For example, war narratives are deeply anchored in Polish historical consciousness, which is less or differently true for German successor generations.
Comics that operate with this develop a specific dynamic in their multi-perspective and polyphonic narration of invented and invented gaps, which preserves a multi-faceted shared heritage from being forgotten.

Gudrun Heidemann is Professor of Literature (German Studies) at the University of Łódź. She previously researched and taught at the universities of Bielefeld, Bochum, Tübingen, Constance, Wrocław and Bamberg. She was a scholarship holder of the state of NRW, the DAAD, the DFG, Bamberg Diversity Visiting Professor in the summer semester of 2024 and was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Willy Brandt Center in Wrocław in 2019, and in 2016 she was elected Editorial Director of Convivium. German Studies Yearbook Poland. Her monograph on Russian exile prose in Berlin in the 1920s was awarded a dissertation prize in 2004, and her study Sehsüchte. Fotografische Rekurse in Literatur und Film was published in 2017. Her current projects include: Trans-Poetics, Cultural Interference Spaces of Eastern Europe, Literary Negotiation of Right-Wing Violence.
