Eye to eye with the fin whale skeleton: information stand and unique encounter with the skeleton at eye level to mark the 200th anniversary of the fin whale stranding

Everything revolves around whales at the MEERESMUSEUM on April 8. To mark the 200th anniversary of the fin whale stranding, we will be providing information about the extraordinary stranding of the animal on the coast of Rügen, the rescue of the carcass for scientific purposes and the history of the skeleton in the Katharinenhalle.

The 15-metre-long fin whale skeleton in the choir of the Katharinenhalle is one of the most famous exhibits at the German Oceanographic Museum.
As part of our action day on April 8, we will lower the one-tonne skeleton on steel cables, giving you a unique opportunity to see it at eye level.

From 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., you can also learn exciting facts about the extraordinary stranding of the fin whale on the coast of Rügen in 1825 at the information stand. How was it possible to recover the carcass for scientific purposes back then? And what is known about the history of the skeleton?
Discover various original specimens and tactile objects, such as a fin whale baleen.

The offer is free of charge with a valid museum ticket. Suitable for all ages. Accessibility is accessible.
