With works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Amy Beach

In the 6th symphony concert , the work of a female composer is on the program as the main work of the evening. The American composer Amy Beach was an exceptional musical talent and, like her contemporary Antonín Dvořák, was very interested in the music and folklore of the indigenous American population. Inspired by the Boston premiere of Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, she wrote her own symphony, in which she thematized her family's British origins by incorporating four Irish folk melodies. In doing so, Amy Beach also made music history, as she was the first woman to premiere a symphony in the USA - and she deserves to finally take her place in the European concert repertoire!

Shakespeare's famous love story Romeo andJuliet has been captivating audiences for over 400 years. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky also fell for the subject, as he confessed to his brother: "There are neither tsars nor marches, but only love, love, love!" In his fantasy overture, he traces the core aspects of the drama and relocates it musically to Russia.

It is an open secret that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was not particularly fond of the flute. However, in combination with the harp, he gives the solo instruments a particularly intimate tonal language that leads the music to an enchanting beauty of sound. Today, the Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra is one of his most frequently performed concertos.

Markus L. Frank began his musical career as principal horn with the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg. At the same time, he studied conducting at the music academies in Detmold and Hamburg. As General Music Director of the Anhaltisches Theater and the Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, he is a nationally and internationally sought-after conductor who is particularly committed to rarely performed repertoire.
