Philharmonic concert
As different as Liszt's two piano concertos may seem in character, they are united by the following: Not only do they show a process of reworking and revision over many years, but in both works the composer endeavors to transfer the idea of a symphonic poem to the concerto form, to connect the movements and themes within the concertos with each other, and to do so - especially with regard to the solo instrument - in a manner typical of Liszt: with virtuoso brilliance and effect! Two compositions that are characterized by folk music influences form the framework of this programme: Kodály's "Dances from Gálanta" from 1933, inspired by the music of the Sinti and Roma, and Bartók's "Dance Suite", which takes up Arabic and Hungarian melodies, among others. Bartók wrote his work on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cities of Buda and Pest in 1923.
