The armory is considered one of the most important baroque testimonies of Swedish military architecture in Germany. In 1700, the old one was replaced by a new one after a violent explosion of the powder magazine in 1699, caused by a heavy thunderstorm, had destroyed the old armory.
The armory is considered one of the most important baroque testimonies of Swedish military architecture in Germany. In 1700, the old one was replaced by a new one, after a violent explosion of the powder tower in 1699, caused by a heavy thunderstorm, had destroyed the old armory. Of particular monumental importance is the unique roof truss, which, thanks to its double hanging construction, allows for a column-free upper floor of 60x15m. The load of the roof truss thus rests only on the surrounding walls. Today, the Zeughaus houses the city library with over 80,000 media units.
