In 1851, the water mill in Neu Kaliß was built and served the economy of the small village on the Elde River for over a century. It was shut down in 1992. Today it supplies the community with electricity as a hydroelectric power plant.
As early as 1790, mill master Markurth built a grain mill on the Elde island between the artificially created waterway and the Alte Elde. This was significantly enlarged in 1851 and an additional granary was newly built. According to legend, the original name originated from the chance meeting of two brothers who had not seen each other for a long time and were amazed to realize: "Oh, let's find each other here." Both were millers and built a water mill on this spot, which can still be seen there today. In 1992 it was shut down. Only the water turbines for the generation of electrical energy were repaired and still generate the required electricity for the community of Neu Kaliß today.
