The Volkstheater Rostock is the four-party theater of the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock: music theater, drama, dance theater and the concert offerings of the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock together form a strong backbone of the cultural life of the regiopolis.
With classic performances in the main theater, good entertainment in the Kleine Komödie Warnemünde and a contemporary program in the Atelier Theater, the Volkstheater offers a wide range of artistic experiences to a broad audience: Food for the soul, head and senses - from May to September then also at the Volkstheater Summer in Hall 207 on the grounds of the old Neptune shipyard. During the warm season, the Volkstheater builds a stage in the former shipbuilding hall and offers special summer highlights in the ambience of historic industrial architecture. With operettas, musicals and - not to be forgotten - theater for children, the historic Hall 207 comes to life for locals and tourists alike.
Cooperations with institutions and companies from the city and the surrounding area also take the ensemble to other - sometimes surprising - venues, from small restaurants to the large Baltic Sea stadium. The theater also cooperates with other art and cultural institutions, such as the Association of Independent Theaters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and tanzland e.V. The Volkstheater is intensively involved in cultural and social education through workshops and participatory projects.
The municipal theater has existed since 1895 - in that year the representative building of the municipal theater was inaugurated, which went up in flames in 1942. Since then, the ensembles of the house have been performing in a former amusement and club building converted into a theater. In 1975, it received its current form through renovations. Today, about 250 artists and staff members put on about 700 events a year.
