Stankt Johannes church in Schaprode is the third oldest church on the Island of Rügen
Only a few decades after the fall of Arkona Fortress in 1168 and the Christianization of Rügen, Schaprode developed into an ecclesiastical center.
Danish bishops found asylum here in the face of disputes with their own royal house. Of the church built at the beginning of the 13th century as a Romanesque basilica, the chancel with the apse is preserved Around 1500, Schaprode was a place of pilgrimage, where a figure of Mary was venerated. The baroque furnishings (altar, pulpit. Baptismal stand. Protestant confessional, patronage pews) was made by Stralsund artists at the beginning of the 18th century. The special tribute to Johannes Bugenhagen, the reformer of Pomerania, through a portrait next to Martin Luther on the pulpit (1723) is probably unique in northern Germany.
