On the tiny island of Riems – situated between Greifswald and Stralsund – is a cutting edge animal diseases research centers. Among other things, bird flu is studied here. The small museum is committed to present the history of this research, focusing on the beginnings and its founder Friedrich Loeffler.
The museum complements the history of virology and Friedrich Loeffler, which is represented in the Loefferhaus on the island. It also deals with the development of epidemic research (beyond foot-and-mouth disease) in the past centuries. It depicts the history of research on the island, but also the life and work of the people on Riems and in Riemserort from 1910 until today.
In Schulstraße 1 (upper floor) in Riemserort, the exhibition can be visited on every last Saturday of the month from 1 to 5 pm. Guided tours start every hour on the hour. Visits on any other day of the week are also possible by prior appointment at museum-uns-riems@web.de!
