In 1924, on the western slope of the Demminer Tannen, the Uhlan monument with an equestrian statue of an Uhlan holding a lance was solemnly inaugurated.
From 1860 to 1920 Demmin was the garrison town for the Uhlans of the II Pomeranian Uhlanian Regiment. In 1918 the regiment was disbanded. In 1923/24 an Uhlan monument was built on the edge of the firs and inaugurated after the Bund der vaterlandstreuen Ulanen collected donations for it. For the construction of the monument, a number of barrows (about 3,000 years old) around Demmin were removed. The erratic blocks were erected as "Germanic runestones". The monument is a work of the artist Fritz Richter-Elsner from Berlin. It corresponded to nationalistic spirit and Germanic cult. These parts were removed after 1945. Fragments of the equestrian statue could be excavated again in the 1990s and put in their place, the site was secured, because the Demmin Uhlans had a city-defining role in the history of Demmin.
