Cape Arkona at the northernmost point of the Island of Rügen is only for the hardy. With winds of 4 Beaufort or more from northwest to east, mighty Baltic Sea waves roll against the steep coast. Rocks lurk everywhere in the water, and when the wind blows from the north, extreme windward congestion occurs.
The north coast of Rügen is certainly one of the most beautiful but also most dangerous spots in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With wind forces from 4 Bft, which are not uncommon here, it is sometimes quite uncomfortable. Beginners in particular should not go on the water at this spot and rather head for the Bodden waters in the immediate vicinity. In order to get to the beach from the parking lot, you have to climb down about 130 steps on a narrow and quite steep staircase. You can't carry much luggage and you might have to walk down the stairs more than once. But once this hurdle is overcome, you can look forward to an experience in the great outdoors against an extraordinary backdrop. Be careful of rocks under the surface of the water and in case of north wind there is a windward jam due to the steep coast. The spot is suitable for wind directions from NW to E.
