The Schwerin State Archives on the Burgsee, built in the early 20th century, preserve the unique collection of documents and files of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. With an impressive mixture of historical style and modern construction technology, it is one of the most important Grand Ducal buildings in Schwerin and has been preserved almost unchanged.
The Schwerin State Archive, an important building from the early 20th century, is located on the Burgsee lake and its façade offers an impressive view of Schwerin Castle. The archive, located in Beaugency-Straße and part of Schwerin's residential ensemble, was built in 1911 specifically to store the documents and records of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These valuable holdings date back to the 13th century and have been preserved almost completely and without war losses.
The building consists of an elongated administration building and a seven-storey storage wing, whereby the innovative steel frame construction for storing the files and the advanced air-conditioning technology attracted international attention at the time. The construction on massive concrete piles, which were specially developed for the boggy terrain, also ensured the stability of the archive. In 2009-2010, the State Main Archive was carefully renovated and, apart from minimal adjustments, returned to its original state. Today, it is one of the most important cultural monuments in Schwerin and preserves an indispensable part of Mecklenburg's history.
