Sassnitz received its church in the period of the bloom of the development of the place to the most important seaside resort of Rügen in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
Tourism also began in Sassnitz at the beginning of the 19th century. From 1824 on, the town developed into one of the most famous fashionable resorts on the Baltic coast. Now it was also time to finally build a church here. Thus, a church in neo-Gothic style was built between 1880 and 1883. Its slender, asymmetrical, 33 m high tower can be seen far out to sea. The altar window was donated by Empress Auguste-Victoria. The crucifix is by Prince Friedrich Carl of Prussia, and in 1899 an organ was donated by the Dinse brothers of Berlin. The friendly church can accommodate up to 400 visitors, as this is required by the high percentage of tourists. All the furnishings date back to the time when the church was built.
