Schmachter See is a lake near Binz on the island of Rügen and part of the Schmachter See and Fangerien nature reserve. Along the reed-fringed shore of Schmachter See meanders the Park of the Senses.
Only about 700 meters from the beach of Binz, the Schmachter See awaits visitors in the west of the Baltic resort. This dreamy, reed-fringed inland lake is about 135 hectares in size and welcomes visitors with its very own tranquil atmosphere. The promenade at Schmachter See is a popular meeting place, especially in the evening, to watch the sunset. A signposted hiking trail leads extensively around the lake. Until April 2003, the shore area in Binz was developed and the Park of the Senses was created. The area of Schmachter See was formed towards the end of the Ice Age, when a glacier tongue was located here. The valley developed into a lake, later into a bay of the Baltic Sea. 5,000 years ago, the lake basin was sealed off from the Baltic Sea by the spit of the "Schmalen Heide". What remained was a rivulet draining the lowland area of Lake Schmachter into the Baltic Sea. The southern part of the lake became increasingly silted up. A beech forest on the northwestern shore of the lake is called Fangerien.
