Historical Buildings, Churches, Brick Gothic

The evangelic Church Franzburg is the still conserved southern transept arm of the former abbey church of the 'Zisterzienserklosters Neuencamp' from the 14th Century.

The building is the rest of the 'Zisterzienserkloster Neuencamp' (mother monastery of Hiddensee). As part of the Reformation the monastery got abolished. Here the Pomeranian dukes caused the establishment of a castle starting in 1587. From the remains of the abbey church the castle chapel came into being.
During the Thirty Years' War Franzburg got plundered and destroyed by Wallensteins troops. Between 1660 and 1678 the remains of the castle got taken down. Conserved was solely the former castle church. Worth seeing are a 'Sandstein-Epitaph' with life-size figures (1615), a crucifix from the 16th century and a Madonna on the crescent moon (15th century).
