In January 1488, the Schiffer-Compagnie Stralsund was founded by 50 skippers or citizens who were closely connected with shipping.
The Schiffer-Compagnie is an association of Stralsund seafarers for the purpose of mutual protection and cooperation as well as social security for surviving dependents, which was founded as early as 1488. The Stralsund skippers donated the Schiffer-Compagnie in 1488, whose building today houses a collection of captain's paintings, ship models and many maritime exhibits.
The red building of the Schiffer-Compagnie at Frankenstraße 9 is a listed building and is easily recognizable with its red gables and with a ship as a weather vane. The Schiffer-Compagnie, founded in the 15th century, still exists today in the form of an association. The old custom of meeting once a month on Thursday, in the Schifferstube, to hold a monthly meeting and in January to hold the general assembly, has remained. Traditionally, representatives of business and politics meet once a year in the Schiffer-Compagnie for the so-called Schifffahrtsessen. In addition, a collection of captains' paintings, ship models and many maritime exhibits can be viewed in the house.
