The island town of Malchow is located in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District between Lake Plauer and Lake Fleesensee
The island town of Malchow lies in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District between the Plauer and Fleesensee lakes. The town was first mentioned in 1147. Malchow initially consisted only of the island. The houses burned down twice within just 30 years. The town was then expanded on the mainland. A wooden bridge was built to connect the two parts of the town. This was destroyed during the 30 Years' War. The man-made earth embankment connects the old town on the island and the monastery. This connection was built between 1844 and 1846 under Mayor Friedrich Meyer. A stone memorial has stood on the earth dam in his honor since 1875. The embankment, which was breached by water during the construction work, now attracts visitors with its numerous seating areas and a magnificent avenue of lime trees. The unique view of the water and the city tempts you to stroll along and enjoy.
