Schwedenschanze rampart between Hohen Viecheln and Bad Kleinen

Between Bad Kleinen and Hohen Viecheln there are the remains of the former rampart "Schwedenschanze". The six-armed bastion built of earthen ramparts was erected in 1638 to protect the trade route from Wismar to Schwerin. To monitor and escort the trade trains, two officers and 48 soldiers were temporarily housed in wooden huts and tents. In addition, warehouses were built to secure the delivery of goods. The exact end of the military occupation of the Schwedenschanze is not known.

Today, the star-shaped fortification, which is hidden behind bushes, is easily recognizable again. With its view over Lake Schwerin, the Schwedenschanze has become a popular destination and resting place for tourists.

Museum of the History of the Hanseatic City of Wismar in the Schabbell
