If you are looking for a quieter stretch of beach on the island of Poel, Neuhofer Strand is just the place for you. Located between the villages of Timmendorf and Am Schwarzen Busch, this natural beach is an insider tip and still quite undiscovered. However, Neuhofer Strand was still a restricted area of the National People's Army (NVA) until reunification.
During the time of the GDR, Poel was mainly used for military purposes. In the years 1976/ 1977 the construction of further facilities was started. A radar coastal observation station with accommodation buildings and halls for motor vehicles was built on the Neuhofer steep bank. Old positions and the "radar station" on the cliff between Timmendorf and the Black Bush still bear witness to the island's suitability as a listening post to the west.
In the meantime, almost all military installations have been dismantled and the Neuhofer beach is used as a natural bathing beach by Poelers and guests. Here you can find a station of the Maritime Experience Trail.
