The "Old Cemetery" is a garden and park area on the edge of the old town of Parchim. With its special design in the form of a regular octagon, restored sight lines, some preserved historical gravestones and a great variety of trees and shrubs, the "Old Cemetery" is an important garden monument and a beautiful park that invites you to take a walk.
The Old Cemetery was inaugurated in 1808. The layout of the cemetery was originally in the form of a regular octagon. An imposing gate at the main entrance consists of 4 massive brick pillars, a wrought iron gate and 2 side gates. Burials were still made here until 1970, after which the area was transformed into a park. Some burial chapels and also graves of important Parchim personalities were preserved. (e.g. of Dr. C. Uterhart, I. J. Loescher, J.H.L. Hoffmann, H. F. W. Gesellius and J. C. W. Zehlicke).
The park is particularly beautiful as early as spring, when snowdrops, anemones, and bluebells form carpets of tiny blossoms. In May, the rhododendrons unfold their full flowering splendor. While in autumn the various tree and shrub species shine in bright colors. Especially the almost 200 years old stately oaks and lime trees, as well as unique weeping and blood beeches stretch their mighty crowns over the area, which invites for a walk.
Garden lovers will find directly opposite the main entrance of the "Old Cemetery" also the park-like Parchimer Wallanlagen, which are also worth seeing.
