NOTE: Due to the danger of landslides in the area of the Elbe slope, the Elwkieker observation tower and its apron are currently closed!
The Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has its special charm in every season. The area between Dömitz and Boizenburg is particularly popular because a unique floodplain landscape has been able to develop here, which is very close to nature.
The lookout point "Elwkieker" near Boizenburg-Vier not only offers a fantastic view over the Elbe river and the fascinating dike foreland with its partly steep Elbe riverbank slopes and sandy heath landscapes; it also provides a view far into Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The lookout tower "Elwkieker" as well as the open-air exhibition "EinFlussReich" above the Elbhang steps are also good starting points for a circular hike through the Vierwald.
A narrow, hilly path first leads through a species-rich mixed forest to the almost 60-meter-high Köpelberg, before returning to Vier via a former border control trail, the so-called Kolonnenweg. The hike takes about 2.5 hours. The Vierwald is particularly beautiful in spring, when the Elbe shimmers through the first tender green of the slope forest, or in autumn, when the species-rich mixed forest acquires its colorful foliage.
