While the town church of St. Mary was built in the 13th century, a second ecclesiastical center was established at the same time: the Franciscan monastery. This included a simple monastery church made of fieldstones, which was expanded at the beginning of the 14th century - today's St. John's Church. After the destruction of St. Mary's Church in 1945, St. John's Church became the main church. It got its current state through two major construction phases in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The St. Johanniskirche in Neubrandenburg is today very popular with friends of organ and choir concerts. It was built as a fieldstone church of a Franciscan monastery around 1250/60.After two fires before 1355, the church was extended in brick with two naves and cross vaults. In the 14th century a polygonal long choir was added to the east. After the Reformation, the choir room, separated by a wall, served as a granary. In the middle of the 19th century it collapsed. Between 1891 and 1894 the church was reconstructed. For example, the vault was renewed and painted in the neo-Gothic style. After the destruction of St. Mary's Church in 1945, St. John's Church had become the main church. From 1976 to 1980 it was again restored and redesigned. Since 2008, extensive renovation work has again been carried out. Every Wednesday from June to September, visitors can listen to organ music for 20 minutes at 12:00.
