A Gothic building structure rarely preserved in Stralsund is the stone tower integrated into the "Neue Hoefen" in the kemladen of Mönchstraße 7.
A two-story construction with a basement, used today as a staircase, with heavy masonry and only small window openings, whose original function was probably a representative living area. On the other hand, the tower could have served as a fire- and burglary-proof storage place for precious trade goods, cash or documents. The small buildings called "Steinwerk" or, if heatable, also "Kemenate" were built in the 2nd half of the 13th and in the early 14th century.
