Due to its location on a thorn bush (German: "Dornbusch") hill rising 72 metres above the sea, also called "beacon Dornbusch".
The lighthouse on the Dornbusch ("Dornbusch lighthouse"), which was commissioned in 1888, is Hiddensee's landmark. Its light shines from a height of approx. 100 m above sea level about 45 km out onto the open Baltic Sea and provides an important orientation for coastal navigation. The 28 m high tower is originally a round brick building. You can visit the permanent exhibition "Technology and History of the Lighthouse" during opening hours.
Attention! Only open up to wind force 6 (Beaufort scale), in dry weather and sufficient visibility! The decision on whether to open the lighthouse will be made on Thursdays around 09.00 am. Information on this can be obtained from the island of Information Hiddensee, tel. +49 38300/608685.
