The city gate with its prominent spire is one of the smaller landmarks of the city of Stralsund.
The Kütertor was first mentioned in a document in 1281 and is one of the 10 former city gates of Stralsund; the Hanseatic City originally had five land gates and five sea gates. In its current appearance it was built in 1446.It got its name from neighboring tradesmen, butchers, who were located in this area of the city. Like many other city gates in other cities, the Kütertor served as a city prison for many years. The neighboring gate closer's house has also been preserved. In the past, the gatekeeper lived here and closed the gate before nightfall and in case of danger. Nowadays you can find a rustic restaurant in this building.
