Already in the 13th century, a Benedictine monastery settled in the convent church of St. Mary, built in 1269. For about 300 years the Benedictine nuns prayed and worked here in Verchen. Then a lot happened...
Around 1270 the construction of the monastery church began. The windows of the elongated brick building are decorated with stained glass from the 15th century. Barnim Grüneberg from Szczecin made the organ in 1881. In the 16th century, a major fire destroyed almost all the monastery buildings. From 2004 to 2014, 4 sisters of the Christusbruderschaft Selbitz lived in Verchen and maintained the monastery traditions.
After a "break" of 400 years, sisters of the evangelical community Christusbruderschaft Selbnitz resumed this tradition. Then the bells called again to the daytime prayers and residents of the village or vacation guests took the opportunity to participate in the noon or evening prayers.Four sisters shared their lives with the residents of the village and the church community.
