Since 1997, the Elbe river landscape has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve that stretches across five federal states. The nature there is unique and the river influences the life, the landscape and people along the Elbe. At the visitor cente fortress of Dömitz visitors can get information about the UNESCO biosphere reserve.
At the Dömitz fortress, right on the right-hand bank of the River Elbe, there are two exhibitions in the information centre for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The old armoury of the fortress is now home to the exhibition "Mensch und Biosphäre" ("Man and the Biosphere"). On an area of about 100 m2, you will learn about the objectives of the biosphere reserves, how they work and what the transnational UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe has to offer.
A multimedia exhibition for young and old can be found in the casemates of the renovated Bastion Greif: "Im Grunde" ("Basically") – the earth is at our feet, because we are standing on it! Have you ever thought about it ? The source of many of the things in our daily lives that we build upon, which we rely on, and the reason why we are still alive – water, food, a place to live in – all come from underneath our feet: ground water, sand and clay and also our soil. Here is where you will discover important information about the basics of our life and our quality of life today!
