The "Hippodrome" is a spot in the southern part of the Castle Garden of Schwerin. It is situated on a small hill surrounded by big old trees. The name "Hippodrome" is derived from the name for a riding arena in ancient times.
The old trees of the Hippodrome have seen generations come and go. The Hippodrome has never been a horse racing arena, but was a popular element of noble horticulture. Schwerins high society met here for a stroll and on promenade. Society ladies in crinolines walked around or went around by carriage. They enjoyed fresh air or went for a picknick to the countryside without having to leave behind the comforts of the city. Riders showed up in elegant costumes presenting themselves on their fine horses.
