In the middle of the forest, about five kilometers northeast of the town of Grabow, on the Müritz-Elde waterway is the Hechtsforthschleuse. This lock was retired years ago and is now only used for residential purposes.
Anyone passing the Müritz-Elde waterway between Grabow and Neustadt-Glewe will sooner or later pass the old Hechtsforth lock. The gray plastered building is well hidden in the forest and is now a listed building. People no longer work here. The lock keeper has long since fallen victim to technical progress, and even the electricity to run the plant now comes from the grid. This was different in the past.
Due to the increasing number of ship transports, the Elde was expanded and regulated at the end of the 19th century. Due to the increasing demand for electricity at the beginning of the 20th century, it made sense to build an electricity plant there as well in order to be able to use the water power of the locks with their barrages. Today, the power station is no longer in operation and has been privately owned since 1997. Water hikers or cyclists can take a look at the technical monument as they pass by, but there is no longer a rest area for water hikers here.
