The Sassnitz city harbor is a mixture of fishing and tourist harbor. A variety of pubs, restaurants and small stores invite you to stroll and linger.
From here, the ships of the Baltic Sea Tour shipping company will take you to the chalk cliffs/Königsstuhl, to Cape Arkona and around the Island of Rügen. In 1889, the first Sassnitz breakwater (380 meters) was completed to protect the fishing port that was being built at that time. Between 1897 and 1900, the pier was extended in a westerly direction (1,000 meters). Between 1910 and 1912, it was further extended to the west, reaching its final length of 1,450 meters.
On the thus longest outer pier in Europe you can walk to the Sassnitz lighthouse. From here, many excursion boats depart for trips along the chalk coast and to the seaside resorts of the Island of Rügen.
