The gabled houses in Wismar represent the wealth of the citizens in the Hanseatic era. 194 gabled houses are under monument protection.

Most of the large gabled houses in Wismar also served as breweries. Traditionally, these houses consisted of a gabled main house facing the street, which was extended by a side wing attached to the rear. While the main house with its storage floors was mainly used for commercial purposes, the side wing was mainly used as living space.
